Master K…

This is Brooks. I’m sorry I have been out-of-touch for so long. I really miss talking to you, but I have been so pre-occupied with my job, family, and coaching. By the time I think to call you, it usually late at night.

I wanted to tell you how things are going, it’ll be easier for me to make a list for you….

We moved to a new gym called PRO-FITNESS & MARTIAL ARTS. It is in Sterling, VA. It is a very nice gym. The owner spent almost $20,000 just on the MuayThai program. All brand-new equipment from Windy. Heavy bags, wall bags, Thai pads, belly shields… Even a full sized professional Boxing Ring! It is very beautiful and they are very supportive of MuayThai.

I have been taking some of my students to fight. One of my fighters is 42 years old and just fought for a MuayThai title in Virginia Beach. It was a very tough and exciting fight, but the other fighter had better MuayThai and won the championship. My fighter understands why he lost and wants to keep training to get another chance at that title belt.

Little Johnny (Joseph’s son) is not little anymore. He is 5’5” and weighs 130 lbs. He has now had 3 fights and has 1 win, 2 losses. You saw him fight in NYC against Borodin’s student. He won his next fight in Virginia Beach last July, but he just lost in Virginia Beach last month. His opponent lied about his age and his fight experience. We found out too late that the guy was 20 years old and had a couple of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights. We were told that the guy was 18 and had no fights. The guy also tried to come into the ring without headgear and shinpads. We made them stop everything and put the gear on or else we were going to walk out! I feel bad about Johnny losing that way. I know that I tried my best to prepare him and get him an even match, but when other gyms lie about their fighters it’s very unfair. Fortunately, Johnny didn’t really get hurt, but I am worried about his confidence now.

I don’t know if you remember, but one of your students from Master Owens Taekwondo school still trains with us. The big military guy named Eric who used to train MuayThai in Hawaii. He lives in California now, but he flies back out here to fight for me. He just fought in Richmond, Virginia last night and the fight was BEAUTIFUL! You would have been so proud of him! Both fighters had very good MuayThai technique. They actually fought MuayThai style from Thailand. They did not fight like many Americans fight that looks messy. Eric won the unanimous decision, and William Varner in Virginia Beach has offered him a championship title match at the end of April.

I have started working for the United States MuayThai Association (USMTA) again. Remember you helped me become the Virginia State Director back in the 90’s? Well, Clint Heyliger looked me back up and asked me to work for them again. He agreed to let me be the State Director of Washington DC, Maryland, AND Virginia!!!

I am promoting my first fight event this coming Saturday. On December 16th, I’ve invited 6 local MuayThai gyms to bring their available novice fighters to come get into the ring with other local fighters. We’re going to weigh everyone in when they arrive, and match them up as close as possible in size and experience. Then we’re going to take some time to train EVERYONE on how to properly score MuayThai!!! I’ve been studying the Thai way to score MuayThai fights, and another friend of mine has just returned from training and fighting in Thailand for a full month! He and I are going to teach everyone the correct way to judge MuayThai fights. We are hoping that the more we train people the correct way to score fights, we’ll see less bad decisions. We’ve all experienced some very bad decisions as fighters and coaches, and we want to do our part in correcting the problem!

Well, that’s all the news for now. I realize that’s a lot to read, but I really wanted to let you know how things have been going. I also really wanted to tell you that now that I have been teaching and coaching fighters for the last few years, I think I am finally starting to understand so many of the things you did as my coach. You were never easy on me. You made me work harder than anyone had ever done before or since! You were very tough with the promoters as well, making sure that me and the rest of the fighters got the best possible matches and were treated well. I finally am able to truly understand what you went through, and I wanted to let you know that I truly appreciate everything you did for me! I realize that I would never have had half of the success I’ve had if it had not been for you.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
Kob Khun Mak Krab! (Thank You Very Much!)
